The Clinic was founded in October 1981 by Dr Zuher Khanji Farra, and both the team and the infrastructure has not stopped growing, little by little (an x-ray room, an ambulance).
Foreigners have always been very attracted to Fuengirola, but the city did not have a hospital and the infrastructures in the public health system and private sector were insufficient to cope with such affluence of visitors. In fact, the nearest hospital was 30 kilometres away.
In a few years, the San Francisco Clinic already became a team of more than 20 people, including doctors and multilingual staff. We fitted an x-ray room (the first in Fuengirola), designed and implemented fully equipped facilities and purchased an advanced life support ambulance service (also the first of its kind on the Costa del Sol). We also entered into agreements with national and international insurance companies (billing our services directly to them); an unprecedented task attributed to Dr Khanji. Foreign patients, both resident and visiting, no longer had to pay private doctors, and their travel insurance took care of covering all their medical expenses in the event these were needed.
The San Francisco Clinic was a pioneer in offering assistance and collaboration with the Town Council in the celebration of events (Feria del Rosario, Feria de los Pueblos, etc.) and sponsored a number of other activities, collaborating with the Red Cross and the Council to devise tourism maps, etc. (see Documentation)
Since 1981 and until the 061 services arrived at Fuengirola, private medicine in Fuengirola and Mijas had one name: Clínica San Francisco.
Nowadays, thirty years down the road, we continue to be the mainstay in medical assistance, despite the improvements in the Andalusian public health service, the agreements with the European Union and the opening of other private clinics belonging to hospitals located in the nearby areas.
